The Pashto Music Institute (PMI) held its soft launch on December 28, 2024, in Malmö, Sweden—marking a significant step in preserving and promoting Pashto music globally. The event gathered cultural leaders, researchers, and musicians to highlight the urgent need to safeguard Pashto musical heritage.
PMI Chairman Haroon Bacha reflected on the journey that led to the institute’s formation across Afghanistan, Pakistan, the U.S., Europe, and Australia. He emphasized music’s role in peacebuilding and identity. “This is a labor of love—connecting generations and cultures through music,” he said.
Dr. Attaullah Saeedzai, PMI’s lead researcher, presented findings on the socio-economic challenges faced by musicians—especially female artists—and called for urgent action to archive and protect this heritage.
Board member Mushtaq Rahim shared PMI’s strategy: focusing on education, advocacy, and digital innovation to elevate Pashto music worldwide. Cultural scholar Ghafoor Liwal powerfully stated, “Reclaiming music is reclaiming our cultural identity.”
A video message from Ziauddin Yousafzai praised music’s power to unite, while live performances celebrated its role in storytelling.
The launch symbolizes hope for a vibrant, inclusive Pashto musical future.
